Mr. GW 2011 Nominees

Aly Azhar Sophomore majoring in International Affairs and Human Services from Princeton, New Jersey
Clubs/Affiliation:

What Makes GW Special:
What makes GW special is the fact that it is an institution that is in the
middle of it all. GW serves as the playground and the main stage for some of
the most powerful and influential people in the world. I love the fact that GW
has hosted prominent international figures such as Hillary Clinton, Barrack and
Michelle Obama, Newt Gingrich, Robert Gates, Jane Goodall, and even Bob Dylan
in the time-span of a few months. GW is also unique because of its proximity to
power, being neighbors with the IMF, the World Bank, the State Department, and
the White House. I personally cannot count how many times I have seen a
motorcade drive through campus, in fact, even the Russian and Chinese
Presidents have driven through Foggy Bottom. It is its location in the heart of
the most powerful city in the world and the unique students and alumni that
call it home that truly makes GW special. Something indeed does happen here.
What's your favorite GW memory:
My
favorite GW memory, that I will always remember for the rest of my life, is
when I waited outside Lisner Auditorium last year for a total of about ten
hours to see Hillary Clinton, Robert Gates, and Christiane Amanpour speak at an
event that was being hosted by CNN. As a freshman in my very first few months
of college, having the opportunity to have such an amazing experience, I
realized how fortunate I was to go to a school like GW. Another one of my
favorite GW memories was the Service Celebration at the end of last year when
GW had not only met but surpassed Michelle Obama’s Service Challenge. As
someone who is very civically engaged and active in public service this meant a
great deal to me and I was very impressed by the accomplishment that the entire
GW community shared and achieved.
What is something about you that
would surprise other people:
Something
about me that would surprise other people is that I am someone who was never
really involved in high school. Besides the occasional club here and there, I
was not really a student leader in high school. When I came to college I
decided to change all of that, I wanted to become involved, become engaged, and
develop my leadership skills. I am reminded almost every day by my GW friends
about how involved I am and by my high school friends about how much of a
transformation I made. Although it has only been about two years, I feel as if
I have matured and grown up a lot in college and there is still a lot more for
me to explore and experience in the next two years.

Senior Class Gift Committee 2011
What makes GW Special?
GW is
special because of the unique and amazing opportunities that are available to
students. Whether it is being taught by a professor who is an expert and still
active in their field of study, going out into the nation's capital for a
classroom experience, or getting involved through one of GW's many student
organizations, there is opportunity for everyone to be engaged. GW has so many
resources that allow students to explore and follow their passions!
What's your favorite GW Memory?
My
favorite GW Memory happened exactly a year ago from this month. I was at the
2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver,
Canada for a GW
class. I was able to learn about the Olympic Movement/Games as they happened
and also was able to cheer on Team USA! It was a truly once and a
lifetime experience that was only possible because of GW!
What is something about you that
would surprise other people?
I'm adopted
from Seoul, South Korea!

Clubs/Affiliation:
Pi Kappa
Phi Fraternity, Inter-fraternity Council, College Democrats, Freshmen Day of
Service Leader, MLK Day of Service Leader, Student Association, 2010Colonial
Cabinet, Colonial Inauguration Coordinator
What makes GW Special?
GW is
special because of the people who go here, and work here each and every day. I
have been able to meet people from all over the world that represent diverse
views and demographics. Still, no matter if you are from the Deep South or the
heart of the Middle East your views and
opinions are respected and shared. Every day at GW I feel like I am living a
once in a lifetime opportunity.
What’s your favorite GW Memory?
I would
have to say one of my favorite memories of GW would be welcoming the incoming
class of 2014. During each CI opening session there would be a video that
showed all of the cool things that students at GW do. During the video I would
watch all the freshmen sitting around me slowly move to the edge of their
seats, my favorite moment was when they played a clip of Michelle Obamas
Graduation speech commending GW’s 100,000+ hours of community service. The
crowd would erupt in applause and you couldn’t help but feel proud.
What is something about you that
would surprise other people?
I am from
a small town in northeastern Maryland
and live on a farm.
