Community Service
Adopt-A-Family This is an annual tradition at GW to provide families in need with gifts of clothing, household necessities and toys. These families are provided by DC social services agencies, including Transitional Housing Corporation, the YMCA, Salvation Army, Academy of Hope and CentroNia. The Cheer Team and Dance Team will each adopt one family. This activity occurs during the month of December.
Foggy Bottom Food Pantry The Foggy Bottom Food Pantry was established in 1981 by the United Church in an effort to offer food assistance to those in need in the neighboring community. The goal of the Pantry is to offer those of low income households enough groceries to last them for two weeks. This program distributes approximately 700 bags of food, or close to 9,000 lbs, each month and is run solely through the efforts of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to help individuals fill out the proper forms necessary for them to receive groceries. This includes checking IDs of clients, checking clients off the list, and giving new clients a form to fill out. Intakes are every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 9:00am-12:30pm.
Walk Now for Autism- WASHINGTON DC WALK NOW FOR AUTISM unites the DC community in support of those affected by autism with a noncompetitive 5K walk and community resource fair, raising funds for autism research, awareness and outreach. GW Women’s Basketball Coach Joe McKeown is a strong Autism activist, and the Spirit Program has supported this event in the past. Date TBD.
