Academic Awards
In addition to Athletics Dean’s List honors, the GW Spirit Program will provide the following academic awards to team members:
1. Academic Achievement Award: This certificate will be awarded to all team members who achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher in the fall semester. Names will be recognized as members of the Athletics Deans List at a home basketball game during the Spring Semester.
2. Academic Excellence Award: This will be awarded to the team members with the highest GPA for the fall semester.  A fundraising contribution of $750 will be donated to each awardee’s fundraising balance.
3. Outstanding Tutor Award: This certificate will be awarded to the team member who has most effectively served as a team tutor and provided outstanding academic support services to fellow program members.

Professor Contact
At the beginning of each semester, team members will be required to submit to the Spirit Program a list of their faculty members, course numbers, and section numbers.  The Spirit Program will contact professors via letter to inform them of the Spirit Program’s academic support program and of what the Spirit Program entails.  This communication will enable professors to better gauge the commitment level required of Spirit Program students, and also provide a point of contact for them if needed.

Academic Plan Meetings
Each first-year team member will be required to meet with a Spirit Program staff member to discuss his/her thoughts and ideas for a four year plan.  Any team member (first-year or returning team member) falling below a 2.0 GPA for first semester will be required to meet with a Spirit Program staff member to discuss strategies for academic success the following semester.  Team members are expected to work diligently to improve their academic standing.

Mission 3.0
The GW Spirit Program prides itself on excellence, both in the gym and in the classroom.  Our team Grade Point Average (GPA) has risen steadily over the past several years, and we are proud to announce that we have a current program GPA of 3.27.  This year, the Spirit Program has unveiled a new academic achievement program: Mission 3.0.  The goal of this initiative is to have all cheerleaders, dancers, and mascots at a 3.0 GPA or above for the Fall 2007 semester.  The Spirit Program will provide services such as tutoring, mentoring, and other student support services to team members.

GPA is not the sole basis for measuring academic achievement.  We encourage all team members to become actively engaged in their educational experience while at GW, from joining a student organization, to participating in community service, to obtaining an internship on Capitol Hill.
